Compare Shopify and WooCommerce for a UAE store: hosting, maintenance, design, apps, payments and migration questions to review before choosing a platform.

Which platform is right for a UAE store?

Choose the platform around your catalogue, selling requirements and the responsibilities your team can manage. Shopify provides a hosted commerce platform with plans, themes and apps. WooCommerce runs within a WordPress environment whose hosting and software requirements need to be managed. The practical comparison is who will operate each part of your store and how the required experience will be delivered.

A platform name does not tell you whether the products will be easy to find, the delivery information will be clear or the team can maintain the catalogue. Start with those requirements before reviewing demonstrations or comparing subscription prices.

AMZ is a Shopify Partner, so our project examples in this guide come from Shopify work. This is a requirements-based comparison, not a claim that we have delivered identical projects on both platforms or that one platform always produces better sales.

Hosting and updates change the operating responsibility

Shopify’s platform overview describes its online-store tools, plans, themes and apps. Platform hosting does not remove the work involved in choosing apps, maintaining product information or reviewing custom theme changes. Your brief still needs to define the parts managed by your team and by a development partner.

WooCommerce publishes server requirements for its WordPress environment. Its update guidance covers WordPress, WooCommerce, extensions, themes and payment gateways, including backup and staging checks. If you choose that route, identify who owns the hosting relationship, software updates, recovery plan and testing.

Compare the actual operating arrangement, not an assumption that hosted means no maintenance or that a flexible setup means every requirement will be simple. Ask who would investigate a broken product page, app conflict or payment issue, and what the agreed support process covers.

Compare the catalogue and buying journey

List the ways shoppers need to choose a product. Furniture might require useful dimensions, finishes and filters. Floral gifting may involve arrangement options and delivery information. Coffee can need clear origins, formats and product choices. These questions are more useful than a general request for a modern-looking store.

Review representative products and collections with the proposed theme and any required extensions. Ask which features are included, which require configuration and which need custom development. Check the mobile journey from collection to product, cart and the next purchase step.

AMZ’s Moda Home work focuses on product discovery, filtering and checkout configuration. Dubai Flower Shop involves bundles and order flows. These published scopes show why the catalogue and buying task should lead the brief; they are not controlled tests proving a platform-wide conversion advantage.

Verify payments and market requirements before committing

For each country you intend to serve, write down the required currencies, languages, delivery coverage and payment arrangements. Confirm provider availability and account eligibility against current documentation and the merchant’s circumstances rather than assuming that a feature shown in another country is available to your business.

Shopify distinguishes direct and external third-party payment providers, which can affect where the customer completes payment. Review provider and platform charges as part of the operating-cost discussion. Do not assume that a logo in a design reference establishes a working integration.

For Arabic and English content, review the customer-facing journey as well as translated labels. Product information, navigation, forms and important messages need attention. WooCommerce provides translation guidance, but your chosen theme and extensions still need to be assessed against the required experience.

Compare total responsibilities and costs

Create a dated cost worksheet with separate lines for platform or hosting charges, paid themes, apps or extensions, development, content and ongoing support. Identify whether each charge is monthly, annual, usage-based or one-off, and who pays it.

A low starting cost can leave important work outside the proposal. Equally, a larger initial build should be explained through the requirements rather than a vague promise of future growth. Compare what the store needs at launch with what can reasonably be deferred.

Ask the same questions of each proposed setup. This keeps the decision focused on a complete operating plan instead of one subscription price.

  • Who owns hosting, updates, backups and technical support?
  • Which catalogue and buying features are native, paid or custom?
  • Which payment, delivery and internal systems must connect?
  • Who supplies products, translations, photography and other content?
  • What is tested before launch, and who approves publication?
  • Which changes after launch are included or separately estimated?

Treat migration as a project, not a theme swap

If you already trade online, inventory the material that must move: products, customers, eligible order history, pages, media and other operational information. Shopify’s migration guidance describes several transfer methods and recommends checking products, shipping, payment setup and test orders.

Decide how existing URLs and important customer journeys will be handled. Include integrations, account access and the point at which the old store stops accepting changes. A preview of the new storefront is one review milestone; it does not prove that all data and operational requirements have been completed.

Before a launch date is agreed, record who supplies the data, who checks it and who makes the release decision. Use the same care for a platform migration as for any change that affects a live buying journey.

Bring a requirements brief to the platform discussion

A useful first conversation includes the current website, a sample catalogue, target countries, required systems and the problems your team encounters. Identify the work that must be supported by the platform and the work that depends on design, content or operations.

Common questions

Helpful answers before you start.

Is Shopify always cheaper than WooCommerce?

There is no universal total cost. Compare platform or hosting fees, themes, apps or extensions, development, content and support for the requirements of your store.

Does a hosted platform remove all maintenance?

No. Store content, theme customisations, app choices and customer journeys still need attention. Clarify which responsibilities belong to the platform, providers, merchant and development team.

Can I keep the same design when moving platforms?

An existing design is a useful reference, but the new theme, functionality and content need assessment. Agree what can be retained and what needs rebuilding before promising an exact transfer.

Should we select payment methods before design?

Confirm the required payment experience and available providers during planning. Eligibility, charges and technical requirements can affect the scope and customer journey.

Does AMZ have a Shopify Partner profile?
